CONTROLS

One button does almost everything. The rest of the keyboard is for navigating menus and the map. Mobile players get two touch gestures covered below.

New in May 2026: the launch screen now has a TUTORIAL button. Three guided steps walk you through steering, burning, and pulling a real slingshot around Earth. You can do it in under a minute and it never counts toward your stats. Skip the rest of this page and try it first if you want.

SPACEFire a prograde burn. Costs fuel.
← →Rotate the ship (free aim).
SHIFTEnter Plan Mode. Zoom and scroll to plan your route without time passing.
MToggle the solar system map.
WToggle up to 5× time warp (15× with the Warp Field Generator tech).
ESCOpen the pause menu (ship, tech, logbook, changelog, spacify).
RRestart the run.
HRe-show the controls hint at the top of the screen for a few seconds.
Plan mode close-up: small colored arrows radiate from the ship toward each significant gravity source. Each arrow is in the body's color, length scaled by gravitational pull. The longest arrows point toward the planets currently bending the ship's trajectory.
Gravity arrows in Plan Mode: small colored arrows from the ship to each nearby body show what is actively pulling you. Length scales with the strength of the pull. If your trajectory wobbles, this is why.
Plan Mode view showing the solar system with Sun at center, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and distant bodies labeled with distances. PLAN MODE banner at top reads: arrows or scroll to zoom. HUD shows FUEL 100%, VEL 62.0 km/s, DIST 17.2M km, NEAR 0.02 AU Sun. Minimap with LOGBOOK, Spacify player, and AUTOPILOT button visible on the left.
Plan Mode (hold SHIFT). Time freezes and you can scroll around the system to plan your next slingshot. The HUD shows distance, velocity, and your nearest body.

FUEL & BURNS

Your ship starts with 100 fuel units. Every burn subtracts roughly 3 units per second held, but you'll never spend it all in one go: the engine overheats after about 3 seconds of continuous thrust. Past 75% heat the warning shows; release while in the red and the engine locks until it fully cools. Pulse short, burn precise.

The base thrust value is tiny. You are not here to fly on rocket power alone. You are here to steal energy from planets. A well-timed burn at periapsis (the closest point of a flyby) converts kinetic energy into orbital energy at maximum efficiency. This is the Oberth effect, and it is the entire game.

A slingshot in motion: the ship thrusts prograde at periapsis, steals energy from the planet, and slings off on a higher-energy trajectory. That is the entire game, on loop.

FLIGHT TIPS

Slingshot doesn't explain much. The in-game TUTORIAL button on the launch screen walks you through the core loop in three guided steps; what follows here is a deeper look at how thrust actually works under the hood.

Pure thrust barely turns you in open space

Out here you can spin the nose freely with the arrows, but a side-burn produces almost no direction change. The faster you go, the worse it gets: the same impulse divided by a larger velocity is a smaller angle. Use this only to nudge your aim toward a planet, moon, or the Sun. Real direction change comes from doing it inside a planet's gravity well.

Inside a gravity well, burning easily changes direction

Burn at the closest point to a planet (or moon, or the Sun) and the same thrust both bends your trajectory and adds free speed. That is the slingshot. The whole game is tuning when and how long to hold SPACE at periapsis.
STEERING

Aim sideways and burn to turn

Don't burn forward to go forward. Point your ship perpendicular to your trajectory and fire. Sideways burns are 5× more powerful than forward burns. The game is designed this way so you can actually steer. This is how you redirect during flybys.

BRAKING

Turn backward and burn to slow down

Going too fast or overshooting a planet? Point your ship opposite to the direction you're moving and fire. Backward burns are 9× more powerful than forward burns. This is the fastest way to brake.

PLANNING

Hold SHIFT to freeze time and plan

Plan Mode pauses the game and lets you scroll around the solar system. Your trajectory line shows exactly where your ship is headed. Use it before every major burn to make sure you're aiming at the right planet.

CORE MECHANIC

Burn close to planets, not in empty space

The same burn gives you much more speed when you're near a massive body. Fly toward a planet, wait until you're at the closest point, then fire. The planet's gravity amplifies your thrust. This is the slingshot — the entire game is built around it.

STRATEGY

Chain planets together

One slingshot isn't enough to escape the solar system. The best runs chain multiple flybys: Earth → Mars → Jupiter → Saturn. Each planet gives you speed, and that speed carries into the next flyby.

PROGRESSION

Upgrade your ship between runs

Every run earns XP from achievements and distance. Open the SHIP tab (press ESC) to spend it on technologies: less fuel cost, more thrust, a trajectory preview line, and more. Upgrades persist forever.

HEAT MANAGEMENT

Tap the burn, don't pin it

Long continuous burns overheat the engine and lock it shut until it cools. The HUD shows your heat level — back off when it climbs. Short pulsed burns are also more efficient at slingshots, since you only burn at the closest approach anyway.

TIME WARP

Hold W to fast-forward time

Long coasts between planets are boring at real speed. Hold W to ramp up to 5× warp (or 15× with the Warp Drive tech). Burning under warp still resolves correctly — you can steer mid-warp without dropping out.

WARP SKIP

Already escaping? Skip the drift

Once you're on an escape trajectory (HUD shows the destination), hold W for 8 seconds and the game auto-completes the run. No more watching the ship coast to infinity at 0.3 c.

UPGRADES THAT HELP

Several technologies improve your fuel economy as you rank up. Here are the key ones:

Fuel Tank Extension+50% capacityMax fuel goes from 100 to 150.
Efficient Thrusters-40% burn · -30% heatEach second of thrust costs less fuel and heats the engine slower, so you can hold the burn longer before the cooldown lock kicks in.
Power Nozzle+50% thrust · -40% heatMore impulse per burn and significantly slower heat buildup. Stacks with Efficient Thrusters: both together push the overheat point from ~3 s to ~7 s.
Solar CollectorRefuel near SunTrickles fuel back when you fly close to the star, and tops up your full tank during a solar storm.
Thermal VentsNo burn cooldownEngine heat dissipators let you hold the burn forever. The default ship overheats and locks after a few seconds of continuous thrust.

THE SYSTEM

Every body in the game, listed by distance from the Sun. Moons are indented under their host planet. Distances are in game units (1 AU = 800 units). Small masses = weak gravity; plan accordingly.

The in-game solar system map at 8.2x zoom. The YOU marker sits near Earth with a green VIBE PORTAL just above it. The Sun and Venus are labeled; Mercury, Mars and a few outer bodies are still hidden as ???. A dashed orange line traces the ship's projected trajectory looping out and back through the inner system.
The in-game map view (press M or open the pause menu). The dashed orange line is your projected trajectory, and bodies you have not yet flown by stay hidden as ??? until you discover them.

SPACIFY

Slingshot ships with 12 original ambient tracks, one for every escape direction out of the solar system. The music player lives in the pause menu under the SPACIFY tab and starts out completely empty: SPACIFY OFFLINE — escape the solar system to tune in.

Every time you escape toward a new destination, that destination’s track unlocks permanently in Spacify. The tracks keep playing in the background of future runs so the soundtrack grows with your logbook. A bonus 13th track exists for players who discover all 12 destinations, but revealing how that one works is a spoiler, so it lives in the endgame section at the bottom of this page.
